American Indian Sautauthig
We got this recipe from the Plimoth Plantation in Massachusetts, where historians say this was a favorite of Northeast American Indians in the 17th Century. They claim it was part of the first Thanksgiving. How much more American can you get?
1½ cups water
1½ cups milk
¾ cup cornmeal
½ tsp. salt
3 Tbs. maple syrup or honey
2 cups fresh blueberries
Heat water and milk in a saucepan until bubbles form around edge. Add cornmeal slowly, stirring constantly. Reduce heat to low and simmer about 10 minutes, until thickened, stirring occasionally. Stir in syrup or until, then gently fold in berries.
